Ancient Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a country with a very long history. The documented history dates back to 700 BC. The first capital of Sri Lanka was Anuradhapura. Where many great monuments built by the ancient Sri Lankans are still survives. Like Egyptian Pyramids they built Giant Stupas ( Dagoba ), where they buried the sacred remains of Lord Buddha. Ruwanweli Dagoba is one of the biggest of them & considered the most beautiful. Like the pyramids no one can explain how they were built because the technology that were used had not survived.

Polonnaruwa was the second capital. The change of capitals happened mainly due to foreign invasions. Anuradhapura was more easily accessible than Polonnaruwa, and was hard to defend. Although the capital did changes the constructions did not. Infact Pollonaruwa has so many ancient buidings, that sometimes people marvel how they were built on the relatively shorter time which it was the capital. Lankathilaka which is a shrine to Lord Buddha & the King's Palace are prime examples for the creativeness of the Polonnaruwa periaod.
